Agnus Day, the Lectionary Comic
Matthew 14 for August 10
It’s worth observing that things don’t get scary for the disciples until Jesus shows up. This is an insight, perhaps, on our own willingness to muddle through with our own half-baked agendas and find God’s intervention in our lives to be what any intervention is: a confrontation with our own sin and a pain in the a**. And that, friends and neighbors, is what we call “the deep end.”
Comment on this comic
Immediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, “It is a ghost!” And they cried out in fear. But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, “Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid.” Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.” He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!” Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

The most wonderful secret of living a holy life does not lie in imitating
Jesus, but in letting the perfect qualities of Jesus exhibit themselves in my
human flesh. Sanctification is "Christ in you …" (Colossians 1:27). It is
His
wonderful life that is imparted to me in sanctification--imparted by faith as a
sovereign gift of God's grace. Am I willing for God to make sanctification as
real in me as it is in His Word?

The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life.
Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the
past, than education, than money, than circumstances, than failures, than
successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than
appearance, giftedness, or skill. It will make or break a company ... a church
... a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the
attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change the inevitable. The
only thing we can do is play on the one string we have, and that is our
attitude ... I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I
react to it. And so it is with you ... we are in charge of our Attitudes.
