Ministry
These are some of the areas to which St. Luke members devote their time,
energies, talents and resources, in ministry among ourselves, to our neighbors,
and around the world.

- Kids For Christ (KFC)
Info: Lynn Fry
Monthly meeting involves fun, fellowship, Christian discussion, and usually a
service project such as making Easter cards or refrigerator art for shut-ins.
They have field trips to nearby places, and participate in occasional joint
meetings and activities with SLY.
- St. Luke Youth (SLY)
Info: SLY Advisors
SLY kids meet often for fun things--recently, snow tubing at Whitetail and an
all-night rock-a-thon. They are active in ministry to other kids through the
YMCA's Sam's Club,** and to older folks with various events at Luther Ridge Manor
and the Inn. They participate in ELCA Christian learning experiences like
Lutheran Youth Day at Susquehanna University. They attend the national Lutheran
youth gathering that takes place every third year, and host a number of
fund-raising events to finance that trip.
From time to time SLY and KFC will have joint meetings and activities.
The SLY advisors are:
Mary Ann Gloeckner (Head Advisor), Tiffany Frazier, Cathy Goodhart, Derek S. Goodhart, Lisa Horton, Kevin Long, and Kenny Sanders.
** SEE BELOW for more about Sam's Club and a link to photos of activities there.
- Women of the ELCA
Info: Ida Jeane Smith
WELCA meet monthly (except July and August); conduct a monthly Bible study for
members of the congregation and the residents of Luther Ridge Manor; make
hospital gowns, catheter bags and walker bags for the Hospice program of
Lutheran Social Services; make school bags for Lutheran World Relief;
participate in Chambersburg Cluster and churchwide women's events.
- St. Luke Men's Ministry
Info: Bob Kane
- The St. Luke Men's Group meets monthly for fellowship breakfast, along with an informal Bible study and
discussion. Twice yearly they invite all the ladies of the congregation to join them for breakfast. They also
participate in various "helps" projects throughout the year.
- Mission Possible: YMCA Sam's Club
Info: Linda Dougherty
-
YMCA Sam's club provides gym time, snacks, Bible stories and even the chance to
swim to low-income and at-risk children. St. Luke adults and youth help by
interacting and supervising the children during swim time, play time, chapel and snack
time, and sometimes providing the snacks. The have helped serve Thanksgiving
dinner to the children and their parents, and helped with the Christmas party,
for which St. Luke this year provided money to purchase long-sleeve tee shirts.
- Mission Possible: Women In Need Victim Services
Info: Bob Losee
- St. Luke members support this ministry to abused women by organizing and
helping operate the Clothing Dispersal center in downtown Chambersburg. A
special need is for "hospital kits" that the women may need when they go to the
hospital, because the police have kept their clothing and personal effects for
evidence. St. Luke men help with moving and "handyman" jobs when needed.
- Mission Possible: Family Outreach
Info: Helen Hessler
- Volunteers provide extensive transportation, child care, and other assistance
to a local family in strained circumstances due to extensive medical problems.
Mission Possible: Global Missions Support
Info: Jack and Mimi White
- We provide part of the financial support and moral support (regular letters) to Rev.
Michael Fonner and Leslie Weed-Fonner, a missionary family living in Malaysia and serving a large portion
of the Asia/Pacific region. Click on this link to read their latest newsletter.
- Mission Possible: BINGO at Luther Ridge Manor
Info: Derek Goodhart and Ann Marie Smith
BINGO at the Manor is hosted about every other month at the Manor at Luther Ridge, on a Sunday afternoon from 1:30 to 3:00 p.m. The residents have a small snack -- Yum! -- and there are prizes, generously donated by the St. Luke congregation, and much appreciated by the residents and the BINGO coordinators. It's really fun to see the residents having so much fun! In the summer we also have a picnic with the residents and play BINGO. Here are some photos from the most recent BINGO afternoon.
- Mission Possible: Other Luther Ridge Activities
Info: Pat Furry
- Most months, St. Luke will host a gathering at the Inn or the Manor for all
Luther Ridge residents who want to attend. It might be a birthday party (with gifts) or a
Christmas party, a sing-along, a concert or other musical event.
- Lutheran Social Services (LSS) Auxiliary
Info: Donna Hilbinger
- St. Luke supports the Auxiliary of Lutheran Social Services by joining the Auxiliary, assisting at the annual Pork and Sauerkraut Dinner and Spaghetti Dinner fund raisers, and providing and selling a table of items at the Fall Celebration Day event at Luther Ridge.
- Lutheran World Relief
- St. Luke members support Lutheran World Relief through regular contributions for their World Hunger program, and through special offerings when asked, as for disaster relief efforts such as that following the tsunami in southeast Asia.
